Why You Need a UX Writing Skill
UX Writing is an emerging field in the tech space even though writing for User Experience is as old as computer itself. It is an emerging field under Product Design and only a few people are aware. UX Writing is defined as the practice of crafting User Interface copy that guide users within a product and helps them interact with it. In this context, copy refers to every textual content that appears on the product.
Usually, UI copies appear in application onboarding pages, empty states, button labels, form labels, gateway screens, confirmation messages, error messages, tooltips, and placeholder texts as well as in terms and conditions of product use.
Therefore, it is the job of a UX writer to guide the users with words that are easy to read and comprehend in a manner that makes the user journey through the product seamless and enjoyable. The UX writer goes a step further to provide directions and explanations where the user might be lost or confused. For instance, when an empty state in an app pops up with words like “No Internet.” a sub copy will usually follow that probably says, “Please check your connection and try again.”
Ease of understanding and accessibility are the core of a UX writer’s job. According to a research carried out by Intechnic, 84% of customers say being treated like a person, not a number, is important to winning their business while 76% of consumers think companies should understand their expectations and needs.
Hence, the reason UX writers just like designers must have empathy in the sense that they must be able to put themselves in the product users’ shoes. While writing for UX, it is therefore important to take into consideration the user context, mental model, user behavior and the users’ thinking pattern. Understanding the user makes the job a lot easier for the writer.
However, it is easy to mistake Copywriting for UX writing but they are indeed two different types of writing with unique features and objectives. One of the most distinct dissimilarity between the two you will hear of anywhere is that ‘unlike copywriters, UX writers work on products that has already convinced someone to use it.’ In other words, Copywriting is sales-oriented writing, while UX writing is Product and People-oriented writing.
According to Glassdoor, the national average salary of a user experience copywriter (UX Writer) is about $57,030 and there are about 240 UX Writer job openings advertised on Indeed and 591 UX writing-related job adverts on LinkedIn with TikTok and Apple making that list at the time of writing this.
