How to achieve simplicity in your design

Picture

“The goal of every piece of design is to make an impression.”

What is simplicity?
Simplicity is not the same as usability, but a simple design is one that is easy to use or implement. Simplicity is a design principle that takes into consideration the end user's goals and proffer the simplest and easiest way to achieve these goals. Simplicity requires a UX designer to understand the users’ need and provide a design to fulfill those needs.

Simplicity in design
The objective of every design is to communicate with the end user. A design should impress and always convey a particular message. Most times in product design, keeping it simple is the best way. Simplicity ensures maximum clarity.

Simplicity is not just about using minimal colors for a logo or graphic design. It is much more about understanding your users and designing a product that helps them achieve their goals.

5 ways to achieve simplicity in any design
  1.  Ensure clarity: make sure your user's needs is clearly understood. As a UX designer, you might have to meet them, observe or work with them. Avoid information that are irrelevant to the user's goal.
  2. Usability testing; carry out usability testing at any stage of your design and do away with irrelevant options.
  3. Frequent feedback: getting frequent feedback from your users will ensure that a UX designer create something that will best suit the user.
  4. Progressive disclosure: progressive disclosure should be used to eliminate overwhelming the users. This will help to differentiate between the basic and advanced features.
  5. Limit options: indecision, hesitation and confusion are limited when option is limited.

C
reating a simple design requires a constant review of the design as well as removal of unnecessary details from the design. The point where there is nothing more to remove indicates that you have created the simplest design and your end user will be thankful for that.
