Gig Economy: Gig-Workers Are in Demand

Picture
The employment report of 2018 revealed that near 97% of self-employed people have no wish to return to traditional work. Of a fact, 70% of them, are confident about expanding their business.
Obviously, they know something you do not.

Gig-workers are in demand.
What is the Gig Economy?

A gig economy is a work or market system that involves temporary and short spanned work. Under this sort of economy, work and positions are usually temporary and often only lasts for as long as the project on which the worker is contracted lasts.

Companies and organizations employ unaffiliated contractors for short-term commitments. The very idea of a gig economy is that workers will be able to work on their own terms, in their own time, and with their own frequency.

The word “gig” is also often used to refer to short term concerts that musicians have from time to time. Gig workers are often found to be freelancers, independent contractors, and some even come as office temps.

Current state of work and hiring globally

Prior to covid19 pandemic, gig work used to be just the alternative. It used to be something to fall back on as a second means of income. Very few people had their gig work as their primary source of income and that seemed to be fine. Today however, with covid19 ravaging the world as it has, and more people becoming too scared to even venture out of their homes, gig work is quickly the new norm.
This has come in the light of many companies having to lay off most of their staff and millions of people suddenly finding themselves jobless. The world has been forced to go into a state of emergency gig work mode.
Now, people are having job interviews strictly virtually. They are even doing most of their work including meetings and conferences and even job training virtually. The workplace of old is slowly but surely being displaced by the new one and soon, it will be the norm.

Who is the Gig Economy for?

Since a gig economy often means freelancing, remote work and short-term jobs, it is obvious that it is for anyone and everyone whose professional life has had to change recently; especially in light of the covid19 pandemic. With so many people losing their jobs, the dynamics of work is changing for most people. For instance.

  • Previously stay home moms may feel a need to help supplement the family’s income. And indeed, the role of the bread winner may very well be flipped.
  • Like a friend said recently; the fear of covid19 is the new beginning of wisdom. Many people will find that going back into a conventional workplace may be a problem, people who do not want to work in enclosed spaces will find the gig workplace more comfortable.
  • One thing about working remotely is that you can literally work with people you have never seen. You all could live on different continents and still work together. If the covid19 pandemic has forced you to work remotely, you may also find that you’ll have to work in the gig economy as opposed to a traditional economy.
  • If somehow, the pandemic has not affected the nature of your work, you may find that it would have affected your purchasing power because of inflation.  A gig side hustle to supplement a traditional job may be in order and that makes you a gig economy candidate.
